The Friends of Abingdon Civic Society is our “sister” organisation, both having grown out of the original Society set up in 1944. We continue to work closely together and the Civic Society supports our plans for the future of the Abbey Buildings.

The Civic Society is a membership organisation which aims to help make Abingdon a great place to live, work or visit; to foster civic pride; and to promote the civic life, heritage and environment of the town. It also works to encourage high standards of historic conservation, planning and development, worthy of the town’s traditions and character.

It campaigns to save the buildings and spaces which make our town what it is; monitors planning proposals and lobbies for the application of good standards to new developments, large and small; and runs community projects such as the annual Heritage Open Days and the Community Freespace.
